Pottery Gallery

Gallery 7 features pottery from every part of the museum’s collection. The larger pottery cases feature exquisite examples of pre-historic and traditional pottery from the well-known pottery making pueblos.

Pottery making techniques have evolved through thousands of years of cultural growth and change. Yet, this pottery is produced in essentially the same way as it was 1,500 years ago. The same clay dirt is gathered and sifted, the same techniques are used in firing and no potter’s wheel is used. The finishing and polishing techniques have become more refined as contemporary potters express their lives through the art of pottery making instead of through utilitarian vessels.
