In correlation with the Millicent Rogers Museum’s ongoing 60th anniversary celebration, the museum will be featuring thirty paintings by Native American artists in a new exhibit, Santa Fe Indian School Style: Works on Paper, opening April 30th. All but three of the works are from the museum’s permanent collection, and the majority of the pieces included in the show have never been exhibited. Several of the paintings were also purchased by Millicent Rogers and Paul Peralta-Ramos, her youngest son and founder of the museum, which ties into the Executive Director, Caroline Jean Fernald’s, goal of exhibiting more works from the museum’s original collection as part of the 60th anniversary commemoration.
Santa Fe Indian School Style: Works on Paper—The exhibition focuses on the history of Native American painting, the development of a distinct style associated with Native American artists in the early 1900s, the institutionalization of this style at the Santa Fe Indian School, departures from the school’s stylistic conventions by famous alumni, and its continuing legacy with current students at the Santa Fe Indian School.

Millicent Rogers Museum Highlights a Variety of Northern New Mexico Traditions in Storytellers: Teaching Heritage through Song and Story, opening March 18th, 2016

This year, the Millicent Rogers Museum celebrates their 60th anniversary celebration, and is taking this opportunity to showcase the finest pieces in their collection by developing a robust calendar of events and exhibitions. The majority of the museum’s collection is representative of the diverse Indigenous and Hispanic cultures of the Southwest with particular strengths in the traditional arts of northern New Mexico. Storytellers: Teaching Heritage through Song and Story, on exhibit from March 18-July 17, 2016, focuses on the multi-faceted narratives that are conveyed across cultures and through a variety of media. This exhibition with be complemented by multiple events directly related to the artworks on display.

Who doesn’t enjoy a good story? Tales, myths, legends and even jokes are centuries old ways of preserving tradition and knowledge. Everybody has a grandfather, a grandmother, an aunt or an uncle who shared old tales with them. And these tales will in turn be retold and passed to new generations. “In the Southwest, stories are not merely told for enjoyment, but can also be parables told for education or deeply spiritual accounts that tell the history of a culture or tradition,” said Carmela Quinto, curator of collections at the Millicent Rogers Museum (MRM).
It is only fitting that the museum, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, has organized an event around storytelling in its many manifestations. “Storytellers: Teaching Heritage through Song and Story” will be on view from Friday (March 18) through July 17. It will focus on the multifaceted narratives that are conveyed across cultures and through a variety of media. “The museum is committed to building and cultivating a strong relationship with the local community, and this exhibit strives to honor and respect the vibrant storytelling traditions of the region,” said MRM Executive Director Caroline Jean Fernald.
4th Annual Taos Pueblo Artists Winter Showcase

As part of the Millicent Rogers Museum’s ongoing 60th anniversary celebration, the museum is hosting the 4th Annual Taos Pueblo Artists Winter Showcase on March 11th from 5:30-7, March 12th from 10-5, and March 13th from noon-4. Unique and original artworks will be available for purchase directly from the artists, and visitors can still enjoy the museum’s permanent galleries during this event. In addition, each artist will submit a work to be given away at a raffle held on Sunday, March 13th.
