Water that Sustains

Throughout all Native Cultures as well as the Hispanic communities along the Rio Grande, water is regarded with deep spiritual respect as a sustaining element of life. In the creation myths of many Native groups it appears as flood waters and water creatures are believed to be among the earliest forms of life. For Pueblo cultures, Spiritual beings control various kinds of water. In Hispanic farming and ranching communities several saints are known to intercede with God to bring rain to sustain crops and livestock.
